Strengthen your core. Exercises to build stability

A strong core supports your posture, helps protect your back and makes everyday movement easier.
The good news: it doesn’t take a long routine to get started. These two exercises target your core from multiple angles, so you can build strength and move with more confidence.
Try a V-Up
This exercise challenges your entire core, including your obliques and lower back. That means better balance and more stability over time.
- Sit tall and lean back slightly, balancing on your sit bones. Extend your arms for support and lift your feet off the floor to form a “V.”
- Engage your core by gently drawing your navel toward your spine.
- Slowly bring your knees toward your chest, then extend them back out.
- Complete 12 to 16 reps. Start with one set and gradually work up to three sets
Try a side plank
This move helps strengthen muscles that aren’t always engaged in traditional core exercises. That means more support for your spine.
- Lie on your side with your elbow bent and positioned close to your body.
- Engage your core and lift your hips, balancing on your forearm and the side of your foot.
- Keep your body in a straight line from head to heels.
- Hold for a count of three.
- Repeat six to eight times on each side. Start with one set and work up to three sets.
Check with your doctor before starting any new exercise program.
