The University of Michigan Student-Run Free Clinic will receive $5,000 to assist local community health care needs

Livingston County, Mich. – The University of Michigan’s Student-Run Free Clinic (UMSRFC) will receive a $2,500 grant from the Michigan Association of Health Plans (MAHP) and a $2,500 contribution from one of its members, HAP CareSource, to help serve Livingston County’s uninsured population.

“UMSRFC provides essential free-of-charge medical care to uninsured individuals. The clinic is addressing several critical health care disparities in the community. Uninsured individuals have limited access to preventative care and, as a result, experience poorer health outcomes,” said Hildur Bjork Runarsdottir – Nursing Director at UMSRFC.

“We’re proud to join with our fellow Michigan health plans to make these funds available for Livingston County residents in need of health care,” said Sarah Musser HAP CareSource Market President, Michigan. “The UMSRFC is not only an important outlet for student learning but also for serving, which is at the heart of all efforts to advance the health and well-being of those in need. We look forward to seeing how these funds are put to work and celebrate the important collaboration between MAHP, its member plans, and this important health resource.”

The Michigan Association of Health Plans (MAHP) first learned about UMSRFC through Representative Jennifer Conlin, and our eleven health plan members, like HAP CareSource, are pleased to support and encourage the continued selfless work this community-based clinic is taking to improve health outcomes,” said Dominick Pallone, MAHP’s executive director.

The Michigan Association of Health Plans (MAHP) is making $2,500 available as part of its Tackling Health Care Disparities grant program. This program encourages community-based organizations to collaborate and deploy local initiatives to create better health outcomes and improve health equity.

“I am honored to connect an association from Lansing that is looking to recognize and help continue the valuable services local organizations like UMSRFC are taking to address health care disparities in their communities. We must continue advancing partnerships like this to improve health equity in Michigan,” said State Representative Jennifer Conlin (D-Ann Arbor Charter Township).
